Some word processing systems are extensible in different ways. One of them is the definition of macros
written in some programming language. MS Word, for instance, uses Visual Basic for Applications as
macro language). Another way to extend MS Word is by add-ins, applications built in some
programming language that are inserted into Word’s runtime (like plug-ins in web browsers). This
feature permits the development of added-value tools for writers. For instance, BibWord
(http://mariachi.dsic.upv.es/bibword) is a bibliography management tool for MS
Word 2000. The current version allows Word users to insert references from a bibliographic database and
automatically generates the reference list at the end of a document. Macros also could be used to attach a
form to the ETD document, the fulfillment of which would provide the ETD metadata from the word
processing environment.
